The hoagie is basically a sub sandwich. The term “hoagie” came from a slang word used to describe Italian immigrants that were destitute. Deli owners would give away scraps of meat and cheese in an Italian roll known as a “hokie,” which the immigrants pronounced “hoagie.” In our family, a hoagie is a sandwich with your favorite toppings and broiled in the oven until toasted. Enjoy this hokie cold or golden brown!
