Bulk bin buying is always a better deal - right? I was of this mindset until one day as my arm was elbow deep in semi-sweet chocolate chips I saw the price $7.99 lb. I stopped shoveling the sweet morsels scratched my head and thought, “that sounds expensive”. So I decided to compare…bulk bins versus packaged. This is what I found:

A while ago I started to become more aware of the amount of food I end up throwing away. While I usually make a reasonable effort to use up leftovers or freeze them for later, there was still enough food ending up in our trash to make me realize that I could certainly attempt to do better. I began searching for ways to make use of everything, and started organizing my refrigerator so that I was less likely to forget about something tucked away in the back.

A friend gave us a handy do-it-yourself sprouting container. Making fresh homegrown sprouts is easy and much cheaper than buying pre-grown sprouts! Basically you get some seeds wet and let them sprout. While you don’t want the seeds to be submerged you do want them to have enough moisture. This moisture is accomplished by daily rinsing and draining. The Sproutamo container is perfect for streamlining the sprouting process.

Baking homemade bread is an experience I have recently incorporated into our lives on a much larger scale than before. I turned to making our own loaves out of necessity and have begun to really enjoy the practice. A hot slice of bread right from the oven is enough incentive to allow for the time it takes to make a loaf or two every few days.

I live 20 miles from the nearest grocery store (at least the nearest store that has what I need). To save on gas for our grocery trips we have changed our habits to involve only making a grocery trip once a month. I know this may sound impossible, but we have adapted to it and benefit from the savings in time and money. The long stretch between shopping excursions also forces us to waste less food and actually use up the things in the pantry and fridge.

Happy Holidays! Christmas break started last Friday and since my wife is a teacher she got a few gifts from her students. Over the years there have been many interesting gifts such as: school inspired ornament set, pewter apple paper weight, ABC lapel pin and lotion. While the gesture is kind the majority of these gifts either end up in our re-gift box or on the shelf of a local thirft-store. Except of course the coveted gift cards to Jamba Juice and Starbucks (attention all students - trading A's for gift cards).
